  • Duration: 90 Minutes (approx.)
  • Product code: PMXDBR

Set yourself up at home on August 27 @ 7pm with 5 x 30ml whiskies, and one Whisky & Alement house-made cocktail, as we launch Australia wide with a new limited edition release from Nikka Distilling Co: the Nikka Miyagikyo Apple Brandy Wood Finish.

On January 8, 1920 Nikka’s founder, Masataka Taketsuru married Jessie Roberta Cowen, better known as Rita. This year, It is our pleasure to invite you to join Kevin Griffin, your Nikka Distilling Co. Australian Ambassador, as we bring you the Australia-wide release of the Nikka Apple Brandy Wood. With this release, we celebrate the 100th wedding anniversary of Masataka Taketsuru and Jessie Roberta Cowen, a love story that not only inspired a soap opera, but helped to shape the entire whisky industry today.

Not only that! This evening, we will be celebrating two milestones: the 100th wedding anniversary of Masataka and Rita, and the 50th anniversary of Miyagikyio Distillery. Take a look through the lens at one of the crown jewels of Nikka Whisky Co, the home of the first Coffey stills in Japan, and the distillery which - through blending and use of malt and grain - innovated the modern Japanese whisky landscape.

Taste a diverse line-up, as Miyagikyo Distillery produces grain whisky as well as malt whisky. The quality of this grain whisky being one of the critical elements for Masataka’s blending. Top it all off with a specially curated cocktail by W&A Bar Manager, Lachlan Watt, which will hero the Nikka Coffey Grain spirit.

About Miyagikyo:

One of the most formative distilleries in modern Japanese whisky, is undoubtedly, Miyagikyo distillery. Nikka Whisky Co's second operation after Yoichi Distillery, Miyagikyo Distillery was built with the intention to contrast its sister distillery, and bring a new level of complexity to the blended malts Masataka Taketsuru - the godfather of Japanese whisky - was creating.

Miyagikyo Distillery is home to the Nikka Coffey Stills, the world’s first patented continuous still invented by Mr. Aeneas Coffey in 1830. Masataka became familiar with the Coffey Still during his time at Bo’ness - a town and former burgh and seaport on the south bank of the Firth of Forth - in Scotland, and imported the first set in 1963.  Despite its old-fashioned structure and inefficiency, Masataka valued this type of still for its ability to retain the flavors of ingredients, and also create a distinctive texture.

Masataka aimed to make his blend more complex by widening the variety of whiskies. In 1967 he was exploring the northern part of the main island to find another ideal site for his second distillery. He came across a beautiful foggy glen surrounded by mountains and at a junction of two clean rivers. Once he tried the water from one of the rivers, which is now the water source, he was so impressed and immediately decided to build a distillery there. The name of the river was Nikkawa river by coincidence.

Today Nikka owns two sets of Coffey Stills, both operating within the Miyagikyo Distillery. Coffey-distilled whiskies and spirits are highly reputed in the world.
