This will likely be the only time we have the opportunity to taste whisky spanning over nine decades - a very special opportunity is upon us. Marcus Parmenter of Nikka Whisky has gathered 6 "distillery blending samples" which tell the story of this incredible whisky, The Nikka Nine Decades.

From it's opening in 1934 Nikka whisky celebrates it's 90th Anniversary in 2024 with this incredible bottling that includes 50 components from the six Nikka owned distilleries. Distilleries most of us will have never heard of like Nishinomiya, Moji, Satsuma Tsukasa and a component of Yoichi whisky distilled in the 1940's.

We'll taste some components in cask sample format and learn about how all of these elements were assembled into this amazing work of art.

The name, "Nikka" is a contraction of the companies original name Dai Nippon Kaju Kabushiki. The "ni" from Nippon "ka" from Kaju. In English meaning The Great Japanese Juice Company. These humble beginning as a juice company on the north island of Hokkaido in 1934 the company made things like cider and apple relish in the early years giving way to brandy once a still was acquired. The now heroic founder in Masataka Taketsuru is the person venerated for travelling to Scotland at the age of 24 to acquire all the knowledge possible to create Japan's first malt whisky for another company in Osaka.

After 1945 the distilleries whisky business began to flourish and by 1963 another site was needed to produce grain spirit. Nishinomiya was the first purpose built grain distillery in Japan. Closely followed by Miyagikyo distillery, Nikka now had all the components to be making diverse blended whisky. "Black Nikka" the first "authentic whisky" made in a Japan. A blend of malt and grain whisky which was sold for the princely sum of 1,000 yen per bottle.

After the two other major shareholders of Nikka sold their share to Asahi in 1954, the company enjoyed a lot more autonomy and its destiny to be king of blenders flourished in the 1970's and the salary man days of the 1980's when whisky sales boomed. In the 2000's Nikka whiskies were awarded some of the most prestigious prizes in the whisky world rivalling what the Scots had spent 400 years perfecting.

Join us for a very special tasting of Nikka whiskies.
