Corn whisky, beyond the confines of Bourbon a rainbow of flavour awaits!
- Duration: 2 Hours (approx.)
- Location: Melbourne, VIC
- Product code: PL30CB
For Bourbon lovers, Corn is typically the lesser talked about grain in the mix of a mash bill usually headlined by "Wheated bourbon" or "Rye heavy". Generally the other grains are focussed upon for their flavours and textures while the corn does makes up the bulk of the ferment. As corn has been highly modified over the years it's very much become the commodity rather than the focus of whisky's flavours.
In this special event we will explore the new generation of corn whisky producers using grains that express the flavours that corn can bring to a mash bill or a 100% corn whisky can be on it's own.
Bring your corny jokes, share a corn chip or two and learn about some brilliant up and coming whisky producers.
As the bourbon market continues to accelerate, new distilleries are working hard to find new ways to stand out from the crowd. New "old" varieties of corn like Oaxacan blue corn, ancient rainbow corn and new strains of yellow are being distilled all over the world. As with barley and rye, where corn is grown and the spirit matured makes a big impact on final flavours. With more than 9 years of experience distilling corn based whisky in Western Australia, Whipper Snapper distillery have just dropped their oldest whiskey to date giving us a view of what's to come from other producers.
Scott Fitzsimmons of Ned whiskey will also be joining us to talk about how corn whisky matures in Victoria along with video interviews from Kununarra corn grower Christian Bloecker, come and join us for an in depth view of the blooming corn whisky industry.
